Where did the name Not Your Friends Sister come from?
Naomi grew up in a family of six sisters, all of whom were so artistically talented and business savvy. She was herself a wallflower and would often be referred to people as a friends sister. As she discovered herself in her art, she knew she was more than just someone’s friends sister. Years later, Not Your Friends Sister was given as the name to a podcast she created with the intention of documenting her journey of determining her voice and settling herself into a name of her own.
How did Not Your Friends Sister Podcast start?
In the summer of 2019, after a break up with a long term boyfriend and realizing that she had spent the better part of 3 years of living in NYC not pursuing her dreams. Deciding that it was time she would take advantage of opportunities and willfulness to start on the journey of a creative career. With an interest in the Fashion Industry as a Designer and Stylist, Naomi decided the best and most efficient way to break into the industry was through acquiring a Cosmetology license. A day before her graduation, the United States went into a full lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A few weeks later she was able to fulfill the hour requirement for graduation. However, with licensing and salons closed for the foreseeable future it seemed that the pursuit of making her way into the Fashion Industry was put on pause. After spending a few weeks in quarantine in her solo apartment, Naomi found ways to stay creative and explore her art in newfound ways. In that time she had realized she could continue her pursuits - it would just look very different than she could have ever expected.
